A pleasing singer with a cool and quietly expressive voice, Carol Heffler performs four of her originals (one co-written with Marilyn Harris) and fresh versions of five standards on Exactly.
She utilizes her regular working quartet (percussionist Chuggy Carter is just on one number), with occasional short solos for pianist John Bianculli and tenor saxophonist Angelo Dibraccio. Of the new material, "Pull of the Moon" (the title cut of one of her earlier releases) is the most memorable. Most of the selections are taken at slower tempos (other than "Lullaby of Birdland") and feature the singer's interpretations of lyrics and subtle improvising. A highlight is her solo interpretation (on which she also plays piano) of Dave Frishberg's "You Are There." Exactly is a solid set.
